Barnabás Neogrády-Kiss
1989, Budapest
“Barnabás Neogrády-Kiss belongs to the group of artists whose work, although divided into distinct projects and series, maintains a remarkable unity in design and motifs. Another peculiarity of his visual language is that his sensibility operates beyond single images or isolated scenes, instead unfolding within a dynamic and ever-changing context of images – this quality makes the term ‘visual language’ (mentioned regularly in connection with his work) particularly fitting. His works do not emerge from a well-summarised concept or idea, but from the fabric of visuality, from the process of seeing, which is a particularly problematic subject matter for the artist. Just as reality and the artist's self serve as a field of constant re-learning and re-building, so does the encounter with his works a constant interpretative and visual challenge for the viewer.
The artist creates his images responding sensitively to the world around him and to himself, often in a way where the spectacle is not fixed, solid, or static, but instead, something continuously unfolding, shaped by the artist's active contribution. Neogrády-Kiss’ pictures have a performative character: the artist grasps the relationship between reality and himself in action, simultaneously in front of and behind the camera, ever entangled in a complex reflective loop.” - Excerpt from the work of György Cséka.
