Barnabás Neogrády-Kiss: Cell-Portrait

In the exhibition Cell-Portrait, Barnabás Neogrády-Kiss takes the exploration of seeing the world and the self — of perceiving our surroundings and ourselves, of gaining certainties about all these, and of the sensations, emotions, and knowledge arising from them — to new levels.

Self-portraits, grid structures, and images of dead organs, structured and organically fused together from their constituting elements, embody the process of searching.

These are experiments: attempts to experience where the boundaries lie between what is merely visible, what can only be known or intuited, and what remains hidden. At the same time, the aim is not to grasp this on the level of theory, but through lived experience — to perceive what determines all this within the sequence of given conditions, situations, perceptions, concept formation, and knowledge.

He is driven by the desire for certainty, for the safety of understanding, yet he continually arrives at the realization that rather than fixed, graspable answers, the process itself is the certainty. To experience, in the present moment, that if we try to move beyond the fixed patterns of perception — and as the mode, detail, and depth of observation change — the emotional, mental, and bodily reactions to stimuli also shift: in the unfolding of ever smaller details, uncertainty and fear may gradually dissolve.
