Eszter Szabó graduated in painting from the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in 2006, and later from Le Fresnoy École Internationale des Arts Contemporains in 2016. She is currently a student at the Doctoral School of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts. Her Her diverse body of work spans drawings, paintings, collages, animations and mixed media video sculptures often employing multiple perspectives. Her pictures are often painted on transparent, delicate materials. Her short looping videos blend generalisation and non-judgemental observation, soft blurring and razor-sharp details. Her point of departure is the everyday; she examines traces of social processes and the intersection of the personal and the political. Her work focuses on the notion of beauty, the longing for harmony, and societal expectations, with a particular focus on the roles and perceptions of women. In recent years, she has been creating portraits of fictional female characters, seeking to portray them free from the preconceived notions and deeply ingrained ideas traditionally associated with ‘femininity’.
