Metzing Eszter
1992, Pécs
In her work, Eszter Metzing delves into the interactions between the human soul and the material world, exploring the relationship between sensory experiences – particularly sight and touch – and the psyche. Her creative practice, also experienced as a meditative practice, engages in an ‘organic dialogue’ with the matter.
By unveiling psychological, symbolic, and transcendental content, she seeks to connect with both the personal and collective unconscious, in search of the possibility of a ‘transcendent experience of an all-embracing substance’.
Her art can be categorised as contemporary fiber art, with a multi-directional interpretation of textiles and fabric-like qualities, sometimes primarily sensual, sometimes conceptual. She creates objects and spatial installations, where drawing and embroidery play a central role. Her practice is particularly defined by formal and technical experimentation, alongside the conscious and sensitive use of diverse materials (such as textiles, latex, borosilicate glass, etc.), and a wide range of techniques. Metzing explores and integrates both the concrete and symbolic characteristics of different materials into the creative process, allowing the ‘freedom of these materials’: She allows their unique characteristics to guide the creative process, in which she seeks to capture the ever-evolving phenomena of constant transformation.
In her figurative drawings, which are an integral part of her work, and often approach abstraction, as well as in her often crowded, swirling compositions, we see memories, human figures, body parts, and fluid form. Her themes range from the personal to the collective, sometimes emanating from shared female experiences, sometimes leaning toward a kind of posthuman transience, creating a symbiosis of the human and the imaginary, blending the tangible with the fantastical.
Metzing graduated from the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in 2018, majoring in graphic design, and has been an active participant in the Hungarian art scene ever since. She is currently working in one of the studios of art quarter budapest. Since 2021, she has been represented by INDA Gallery, where she has had two solo exhibitions (Fabric of Childhood, 2021; The Skin Sees When the Eyes Touch, 2024). Her works have also been exhibited at LokART and Bánkitó Festivals, Hybridart Space, ISBN book+gallery, Nyolcés½, and Deák17 galleries, and they can be found in the collection of Hungarian Art & Business (HAB) as well as in important private collections (e.g. the Kacsuk Collection).
