Ádám Szabó: Bright Outside

Bright Outside

Works by Ádám Szabó at INDA Gallery

The curtain and the blind lowered in front of the window conceal, obscure, and filter the light, while at the same time allude to the other side, a world beyond them. And how does this system of relations expand when only the place of a once-existing window remains, its memory evoked behind the blind, yet light still arrives from beyond? And what if the folds through which the sunlight breaks are not soft textiles, but carved and polished stones?

Opening on May 13, Ádám Szabó’s exhibition presents sculptures made using a variety of materials and techniques, alongside a site-specific installation and a video work. Some of the pieces date back to the artist’s early career, while the majority originate from the period from 2023 to the present day. What connects them is the motif of the curtain, and the relationship between the inside and the outside, the world here and the world beyond. Within this system of relations, and through these material and conceptual frameworks, Szabó examines the dynamics not simply of concealment, but rather of covering and uncovering; the sensual illusion of matter and the image; and the temporality of the image itself. Drapery is, of course, a classical sculptural theme, yet Ádám Szabó approaches it in his distinctly fresh contemporary language, marked also by the philosophical depth, elegance, playfulness, and wit characteristic of his entire oeuvre. He questions experiences that have hardened into seeming self-evidence, and lures the viewer into paradoxes of matter and time, of perception – as well as of possible realities and the ways we perceive them.

Opening: 13 May 2026, 6 pm, INDA Gallery

The exhibition will be opened by art historian Mélyi József.
