Lilla Szász: Because The Sun May Rise Tomorrow

Szász’s work explores the relationship between homeland and home: what it means to feel at home somewhere, what social and personal conditions shape the decision to stay or to leave, and how younger generations relate to the country in which they live.

Over a period of three years, the artist followed young people in Havana with her camera. Through intimate portraits and accompanying interviews, the series presents the lives of those navigating political and economic constraints while building communities and making decisions about their future. The photographs examine questions of belonging, identity, mobility, and staying through personal narratives and broader social contexts.

Maybe Tomorrow the Sun Will Shine focuses on four young individuals and their community. In their twenties and thirties, they mediate between the legacy of socialist mentality and an increasingly global and open, yet anxious, contemporary Cuban mindset, while searching for their place within a changing social landscape. The portraits are accompanied by sensitive interviews with the protagonists.
