seeds, weeds, leftover seeds, weeds, byproducts
Seeds are seen as carriers of stories and histories: as tiny but complete entities that unfold slowly. Seeds can travel long distances, changing local ecosystems in the form of ballast flora, traveling in the stomachs of cargo ships, germinating in their new homes. Seeds can remain dormant for up to centuries, and then — if conditions permit — they can suddenly germinate and grow. Certain seeds need strength to germinate; conditions that are often perceived as crises, such as fires or floods.
Eye-catching focuses on the origin histories of indeterminate cultures and natural environments that preceded these unknown cultures. The exhibition is an ensemble of these stories — the visitor is invited to immerse themselves in the thickets of these narratives to explore our intertwining with plant materials. Zsófia Szemző's work focuses on the slow and meticulous process of exploration: imagined pasts and imagined futures from the perspective of the present and imagined pasts from the perspective of imagined futures. These conceptual excavations appear in different forms and mediums: drawings, collages, videos, ceramic objects and installations fill the gallery space. The starting point of Szemző's recent works is a family story: Szemző's family has recently discovered official and private correspondence from his grandfather, including his experiments with soy in the late stages of his life. His grandfather was born in 1894, was an agricultural researcher and farmer; he worked in sugar beet, fodder crops and soybeans, worked in the post-World War II crisis, 1947-1948 in the Ministry of Agriculture, later became a translator of agricultural texts, and then settled in the Research Institute of the Feed Base. In part, this family thread serves as the basis for the exhibited works. The drawings flash how we learn about the development of plants through the process of germination, the preservation of seeds, the knowledge that thickens into seeds; through famine and drought data, through the plants grown from the oldest seeds, through the different traditions associated with traditional sowing and harvesting. The other defining narrative unfolds in dealing with the possible climate and agricultural future and the potential in seeds. His works Leguminosae futurum and The Order of Seeds show the potential for self-sustaining and resilience of seeds and the potential of beans to become the most important source of protein in the future.
